The year 2022 was a disastrous one for the Hindi film industry. However, trade experts are looking forward to 2023 with the hope that films, starring A-listers, can bring a lot of moolah at the box office. We asked the trade experts about the films they feel could work at the box office.
Pathaan, Jawan, Dunki, Tiger 3, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, Shehzada: Trade experts list out the films which they feel can work BIG time at the box office in 2023
Film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi answered in detail, “I am somehow confident of both the films that Ranbir Kapoor is in. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar looks promising, as Luv Ranjan is a terrific storyteller. Animal is directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, who can really score.”
He also has hopes for Adipurush, despite criticism, “Even though the teaser was heavily scrutinized, I am sure with the sprucing up of the VFX, Om Raut, who is a very cinematic storyteller, can score pretty well with Adipurush when it releases in theatres. Salaar, which brings Prabhas and Prashanth Neel together, will be very exciting. Pushpa 2 – The Rule, if it makes it by December 2023, will be huge.”
Akshaye Rathi continued, “Varun Dhawan’s Bawaal can be exciting as Nitesh Tiwari is a fine storyteller. Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan can do very well. Ajay Devgn and Neeraj Pandey was one combination that was waiting to happen and I am very excited about their film together. Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani is helmed by Karan Johar and hence, it can put up huge box office numbers.”
With Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files emerging as the 2022’s biggest hit, Akshaye makes a special mention of his next film, “The Vaccine War can also surprise.”
On Kartik Aaryan’s Shehzada, he said, “It will be the true test of his stardom.”
Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise in Jaipur, said, “Ranbir Kapoor is a fantastic actor and both his films seem promising to me. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar is a romcom and Animal seems like a wild, mass cinema.”
He also said, “Kartik Aaryan’s films seem interesting. He’s very popular among the youth. Both Shehzada and Satyaprem Ki Katha will surely take a good opening after which the content will decide the film’s fate.”
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “Yes definitely. The year looks exciting, starting with Pathaan and so many other films, backed by stars. 2023 is going to be a significant year, provided Covid doesn’t play spoilsport.”
When asked to predict when films can do well, he replied, “No one can predict. Did you ever imagine Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 racing ahead of so many films in 2022? Or even The Kashmir Files for that matter? Even Drishyam 2 makers would have expected it to collect Rs. 125 or Rs. 150 crores at the maximum. It’s not a masala, event or front loaded film. There’s no action. But this film has crossed the Rs. 225 crores mark.”
Khan’s films riding with a lot of expectations
All trade experts unanimously felt that the three Shah Rukh Khan films – Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki – and the two Salman Khan releases – Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan and Tiger 3 – can work wonders.
Trade analyst Atul Mohan said, “Jawan is a true-Pan Indian film. Due to director Atlee’s association, Jawan can get a huge boost in the South. Atlee’s film with Vijay did a business of Rs. 150-200 crores in Tamil Nadu. If the public there gives the same kind of love to Jawan, imagine the overall business of the film.”
He also said that Dunki and Tiger 3 can work because “the business of Rajkumar Hirani’s film is more than his previous film. Even the Tiger franchise is becoming bigger with each passing film.”
On Pathaan, he said, “Pathaan’s controversy is going to help the film. Siddharth Anand is one of the biggest directors we have today. Shah Rukh Khan can become a pan-Indian star in 2023.”
Akshaye Rathi said, “With Pathaan, Jawan, Dunki and Tiger 3, I am sure both Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan will absolutely rock at the box office and give their fans the much-needed reason to celebrate all over again”
Raj Bansal predicted, “I can say with confidence that Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki will take a very huge opening. Even Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi and Tiger 3 will open with a bang. After that, the content, music etc. will decide the fate (of these five films).”
Taran Adarsh signed off hoping for ‘acche din’ in 2023, “2022 has been disastrous. We ended the year on a very sad note (with the debacle of Cirkus). I hope the industry blooms in 2023.”
