For the past few days, Indian film industry has been celebrating for creating history at Oscars 2023. Considered to be one of the most prestigious platforms in the world of cinema, S.S. Rajamouli’s RRR and Guneet Monga’s The Elephant Whisperers managed to win hearts at the 95th Academy Awards. Recalling his own Oscar winning experience, music composer A. R. Rahman opened up about the kind of films that go from India as its official entry into Oscars.

A. R. Rahman reveals that we are sending ‘wrong films’ to the Oscars; says, “I have to be in Westerner’s shoes to see what’s happening here”

Talking about nominating films during Oscars 2023, in an interview with L Subramaniam, A. R. Rahman said, “Sometimes, I see that our movies go till the Oscar… they don’t get it. Wrong movies are being sent for the Oscars. And I am just like DON’T. We have to be in another person’s shoes. I have to be in Westerner’s shoes to see what’s happening here. I have to be in my shoes to see what they are doing.”

Readers would recall that A R Rahman himself has won an Oscar way back in 2009 for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for the film Slumdog Millionnaire along with composer Gulzar at the 81st Academy Awards. While Slumdog Millionnaire was produced by Christian Colson and directed by Danny Boyle, RRR, which won in the Best Original Song category this year, was produced by D.V.V. Danayya and directed by S.S. Rajamouli.

Talking about the Oscar entries for the 95th Academy Awards, India’s official entry was the Gujarati film Chhello show (The Last Show). While RRR too was running for the nominations, the film was not included as an official entry in the Best Foreign Film category, instead, it got nominated in the Best Original Song category for its dance track ‘Naatu Naatu’.
