Damien Chazelle’s Babylon, which debuted on Christmas, is being considered one of the biggest box office flops of 2022 in Hollywood. The reason being cited for such poor performance is its runtime that clock at whopping three-plus hours, but there exists a shorter version of the film as well! According to Variety, during a recent Los Angeles Q&A for the film, Chazelle revealed that he prepared for Babylon by filming a two-hour shot on his iPhone in his backyard.

The Oscar winner’s two-hour version only starred two actors: Diego Calva, who plays assistant-turned-producer Manny Torres in the film, and Olivia Hamilton, who stars as director Ruth Adler and also happens to be Chazelle’s wife.

“It’s a very tight, two-hour version of the entire movie, [filmed] on an iPhone in our backyard,” Chazelle said. “We rehearsed the whole movie in his backyard, only Olivia, Damien and I,” Calva added. “It was a very uncommon kind of situation.”

From Damien Chazelle, Babylon is an original epic set in 1920s Los Angeles led by Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Diego Calva, with an ensemble cast including Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li and Jean Smart.

A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.

Babylon debuted in theaters on December 25.
