Madhur Bhandarkar relives the period with precision and maturity, narrating four stories with solid conviction… Every story/character stands out… IndiaLockdown is amongst Madhur’s best works.

On the whole, India Lockdown is a fairly nice account of the lockdown but the takers for this kind of a film with a documentary-like feel, would be limited because not many may want to relive those horrific days. It is good that the film has premiered digitally as its sustenance in cinemas would be difficult.

It’s funny how the human mind can process and put behind the worst of tragedies. ‘India Lockdown’ takes us back to 2020 when India went into one of the strictest lockdowns in the world, and how the people suffered through it. Now that the worst of Covid 19 is over (we hope), it already feels safely in the past. But it’s still too early to have forgotten the horrors of the pandemic at a time when no one had any idea of how to combat the deadly virus sweeping through the world, leaving thousands dead. The rest is just banal story-telling, with little new to say.

While this Madhur Bhandarkar directorial lacks the depth and layering in characters like we saw in some of his finest works (‘Page 3’, ‘Chandni Bar’ and ‘Fashion’), it does have moments that will touch your heart and remind you of the helplessness of the time. In the end, the fact that you can watch this film and perhaps see yourself in one of its characters, is a rewarding feeling of being alive.

Madhur Bhandarkar’s direction is fair. To give credit where it’s due, it reminds viewers of the hardships they faced 2 years back. On the flipside, the film is too depressing and is not everyone’s cup of tea. The bigger problem, however, is that certain developments are bewildering, due to the absence of a back story. On the whole, INDIA LOCKDOWN rests on some fine performances and touching moments. But the film suffers majorly due to poor writing.

The movie might seem like a snooze fest at first, but it has a certain amount of calmness and honesty, which was needed to touch such a sensitive topic. It is a heartbreaking tale about the massive coronavirus outbreak in 2020 and how the world stood still for many, while for others, it took away everything they ever had.

Madhur Bhandarkar’s India Lockdown is now streaming. The film, which has an ensemble cast of Prakash Belawadi, Shweta Basu Prasad, Prateik Babbar, Sai Tamhankar and Aahana Kumra, attempts to showcase how the pandemic and the ensuing lockdown affected different strata of society. However, what should have evoked empathy because of the plight of different people during that time, barely manages to move us.

India Lockdown is obviously relevant because it harks back to a time we continue to define through our own memory. Despite the outlandishness of some of Bhandarkar’s stories this is an intriguing segue into some of the unacknowledged aspects of those unprecedented weeks. Sex, lust, depravity, are all fair game in this film that is brave enough to accept that the human condition is destined to outlive any tragedy, mental or physical. It is possibly this reduction, or tendency to return to our primal instincts that makes us, who we are. It’s not always pleasant watching, but when have humans ever wanted to earn that badge of honour anyway. Least of all in the middle pandemic where the latest thing you did could also be remembered as the last thing you did. What would you choose?
