Zeenat Aman opens up autographs being replaced by photographs; says, “I imagine that this practice died a natural death with the advent of the smartphone”
On Tuesday, Zeenat took to Instagram and shared a black-and-white throwback picture of hers flashing her beautiful smile as she poses for the camera. The picture also has her autograph on it. Sharing the picture, Zeenat captioned, “I was surprised to be recognised on the ferry back from Alibag the other evening. I had thought my age, my sunglasses and my mask would keep me incognito. Yet a group of young men approached me on the deck and requested a picture, which I politely declined. As mentioned in my last post, I was just about recovering from the flu and had endured a tedious day of bureaucracy. Neither of which left me in the mood to socialise or pose. I was sorry to disappoint these lovely fans, but there are boundaries that I find important to draw for myself. I am happy that they respected my response, as it’s not always the case.”
Recollecting her experience, she added, “Back in the 70s, before everyone had a smartphone in their pocket, the only proof of having met or interacted with a film star was an autograph. My wonderful mother would print hundreds of headshots of me, and then sit me down on the table and have me sign each one. These autographed pictures would then be sent out in response to fan mail, or handed out to fans who I encountered in my life (often with a personal note). This particular picture was shot specifically for this purpose, and you can see my signature on it.”
“I imagine that this practice died a natural death with the advent of the smartphone, but I do miss its charming simplicity. My younger one is urging me to print out a fresh set of recent headshots for this purpose, but I doubt such postcards will be able to compete with the camera phone! What do you think?” she concluded.
Soon after she shared the picture, industry friends and fans poured their love for the actress in the comments section. Reacting to the post a fan wrote, “I would appreciate a postcard any day over a selfie. I will frame it and hang it on the wall as a memory for myself. People click selfies with celebrities to brag on social media,” another user commented, “Please please do print them!! There’s nothing like the touch and feel of a prized memory of meeting someone who you respect and adore.” A comment read, “What I notice and witness is simply beautiful and elegant pieces of notes written by you in every post. They reflect life, some excerpts of old experiences, some scribbles of your thoughts and emotions.. evert post is a gem to read in itself as it reflects your true self which I believe hasn’t been revealed ti the old fans or the newer generation. Wonder if you could think of compiling them all in form of autobiography…or a book of old memories and current change of life and situations,” “There would be no competition ideally, your postcards might bring this charming simplicity back to life!! Please go for it,” read another comment.
