A movie-watching experience in cinemas is incomplete today without munching on popcorn, samosa, etc., or sipping a beverage. With so many patrons watching a film every single day, the number of samosas, popcorn, cold drinks, etc. being sold daily in theatres must be considerable. And Inox today, for the first time, released an interesting report in this regard that gives not just a fair idea about the number of food and beverage units sold but also lists a city-based comparison of the F&B sales at their 167 cinema halls across the 74 cities of India.
Bollywood Hungama, in this special report, brings to you some of the fascinating insights, trends, and surprises that were seen in the cinema food report released by Inox for the year 2022:
Inox releases first-ever food report; reveals that it sold 883 tons of popcorn, 19.38 lakh samosas, 38.15 lakh litres of soft drinks in its theatres in 2022
1. A whopping 863 tons of popcorn was sold out of which 7.88 metric tons of it was sold in Mumbai. In fact, patrons in Mumbai ate more popcorn than their counterparts in 29 cities like Mysuru, Nagpur, Kolhapur, Belgaum, Nashik, Ghaziabad, Kanpur etc.
2. Patrons bought 19.38 lakh samosas throughout the year. 10.70% of samosas were sold in the 3 major Southern cities of Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad.
3. Fries have also become popular as a snack during films. This is evident by the fact that 82 tons of fries were sold this year.
4. While Inox didn’t mention how many plates of nachos were sold, it simply mentions that the weight of the number of units sold of the popular snack was equivalent to 2.5 Boeing 737-800 aircraft. At another point in the report, it states that 11.25% of nachos in Inox were sold in their theatres in Bengaluru.
5. 3,38,859 puffs were consumed by patrons in Inox theatres. Interestingly, as many as 55% puffs were sold in 3 South cities, all of which are in Tamil Nadu – Chennai, Madurai, and Salem
6. As much as 38.15 lakh liters of cold beverages were sold. Kolkata topped the list of the city where patrons guzzled the most amount of soft drinks – 3.43 lakh liters.
7. Watching a film in an air-conditioned multiplex is also pleasurable while sipping tea and coffee. 20.28 lakh cups of hot beverages were sold by the multiplex chain in 2022.
8. 5.16 lakh sandwiches, 2.86 lakh burgers, and 1.74 lakh burgers were bought by moviegoers. Madurai and Salem were among the top 10 sandwich-consuming cities ahead of cities like Lucknow, Gurgaon, Pune, and Delhi. Similarly, Vizag was a surprise as its patrons consumed more burgers than in Mumbai, Lucknow, Gurgaon, and Kolkata.
9. 26% of the total ice creams across Inox multiplexes in India were sold at Kolkata and Madurai. And believe it or not, a mind-boggling 75% of doughnuts were sold in Chennai alone.
10. Chinese dishes have also become commonly sold items at the F&B counters. 10.96 lakh pieces of dim-sums and more than 40,000 noodles and fried rice plates were sold. Yet again, Kolkata ranks on top as the city with the most momo-eaters. The Inox theatres in the capital of West Bengal sold 2.21 lakh pieces of it.
