Sriram Raghvan’s 2012 spy-thriller movie, Agent Vinod, starring Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, had high expectations from fans and critics alike. Agent Vinod was heavily influenced by Hollywood’s James Bond franchise, and Raghvan tried to create an Indian version of it with a strong storyline and action sequences. However, it failed to perform well at the box office and received mixed reviews.

Recently, Sriram addressed the poor performance of the Saif Ali Khan starrer and admitted that giving more importance to sequence than the story was a “mistake”. Meanwhile, he also confessed that he does “get tempted by a sequel.” In an interaction with Galatta Plus, the director-writer said, “One mistake I made is to take it for granted that the story is not vital, the sequences are vital.”

He further explained, “I mean if you take Octopussy, what is the story of Octopussy? I’ll get lost somewhere in between but watching it is great fun. But that approach is good for a Bond (film) which is already a franchise. Saif and I, we should have been making the first Bond, Dr No, which is a fairly realistic film in its own way.” According to Sriram Raghavan, people do not usually bring up the topic of his film Agent Vinod during his lectures, but he still enjoys discussing it.

Sriram Raghavan revealed that Saif Ali Khan suggested the title for Agent Vinod and he loved it, thinking it would make for a good camp movie. However, the film turned out to be a “headache” and “exhausting” instead of the “heady cocktail” he had hoped for. Despite this, Raghavan still finds some of the sequences in the film terrific and enjoys watching them.

Coming to the professional front, the 59-year-old director’s next is Merry Christmas, which will star Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi.
