The film is laden with melodrama and feels overstretched, with average songs that fail to leave a mark. However, the cinematography by Kabir Lal beautifully captures the essence of Varanasi. The motivation behind the sons’ decision to abandon their father remains underexplored, leaving a gap in the narrative. While the helplessness of Patekar’s character stirs empathy and brings a lump to your throat, it falls short of delivering the emotional catharsis of films like ‘Baghban.’ Director Anil Sharma’s intentions are genuine, but the execution feels underwhelming, lacking the sharpness needed to truly resonate.

Like Ramayana’s story of good sons and bad stepmothers and vanvaas, this tale is a Bollywood evergreen: of parents abandoned and left desolate by their children in old age.

Baby John could either benefit from the withdrawal symptoms fans are experiencing after Pushpa 2: The Rule or lose the battle to Allu Arjun’s mass-actioner.

Baby John is no doubt engaging, but what the film lacks is crisp storytelling. All the performances are decent. But if you really love the smell of blood and the giggling of gun, this is indeed a film for you. The movie is pumped up with immense mass moments. Engaging and entertaining, but lacks the emotional connection and fine storytelling which is the main requirement for an immersive film. And in no way is it a family movie.

The mass commercial actioner is directed by Kalees, who retains the Atlee flavour and adds his own style into the mix. It should lift off the Christmas curse from the Hindi film industry as the last few films released on this festive season failed to bring audiences to the theatres. Baby John is the perfect masala entertainer that the Bollywood needed to round off a rather disappointing year.
