I blame the current and frustrating fetish of the audience to watch ‘Mass’ cinema that we glorify flawed people and their perverted understanding of machoism. Shahid Kapoor, an always earnest performer, overdoes his ‘intense’ and vacant gazes that we mistake for heroism.

Rating Score -> 3/5

While the film celebrates its heroic cop, it doesn’t shy away from critiquing the very institution Dev represents. Despite the flaws, Deva is a slow-paced and engaging investigative thriller. It’s entertaining and the biggest strength of the film is Shahid Kapoor!

3. Indian Express

Rating Score -> 1.5/5

Shahid Kapoor film is dragged down by loose threads, long slack stretches. There are at least a couple of instances when Shahid Kapoor does come alive, reminding us of the actor that he can be. Both are scenes in which he allows his character to be vulnerable.

Rating Score -> 2/5

Shahid’s heft is the only thing that keeps up the momentum in a mediocre rehash, dumbed down by flimsy motive and mindless bravado.

Rating Score -> 2.5/5

Shahid Kapoor’s Deva clearly disappoints despite having potential. However, the film ends on a note that opens the gates for a second part, and knowing the filmmaker in Rosshan, one can expect something positive.

Rating Score -> n/a

The film was about to start on a good note when it is marred by amateur VFX in the first scene itself. Choosing to ignore it, one waits for Shahid to channel his Haider hairstyle-meets-Kabir Singh’s anger mode. And he delivers from the word go. The swag is on point, and may I also add that he makes for a damn good-looking cop on screen.
