Best to make peace with it, and enjoy ‘Dupahiya’ for what it aims to do — deliver clean, ‘socially-relevant’, family-entertainment — ‘na gaali, na dunaali, na katta, no goli’– an anti-Mirzapur, if you will, even if the accents drop, and even when there are lags. Plenty of laughs are thrown in, topped by such helpful lines: ‘yeh Bihar ka Belgium hai’. How can you not crack up, even when you know that it is a dialogue? I’m pretty done with non-stop gratuitous ‘gaali-galaauj’, so I will take it, thank you.

The best part of Dupahiya is that the senior actors – Gajraj Rao and Renuka Shahane – act as strong supporters rather than as leaders of the series. The series is led by the younger lot, and this balance is so impressive and magical that you’ll fall in love every time the story takes a twist!

Such a collection of amiable characters were last seen in Panchayat. There are greedy dowry seekers (don’t they demand cars, these days?), criminals, misogynists and the like, but the collective goodness of the others keep violence and male chauvinism in check. Actors like Gajraj Rao, Yashpal Sharma, Renuka Shahane, Bhuvan Arora and Sparsh Srivastava make Dupahiya watchable, but the lesser known actors fit right in too.The colloquial dialogue is sharp, piquant and funny — the English subtitles cannot do the lines justice.
