Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan [2022] has set a new benchmark for Bollywood films. In cricketing parlance, this would be akin to doing a Brian Lara at the box office. The former West Indies great batsman had shattered records when he became the first player to score 400* runs in a Test match against England in Antigua, 2003-04. Khan’s Pathaan has become the first Bollywood [hindi] to breach the Rs400 crore nett box office mark in India.
Directed by Siddharth Anand, and produced by Yash Raj Films, Pathaan [2023] has so far made Rs410.75 crore nett at domestic box office, as reported by BoxOfficeIndia.com. The film enjoyed a fine second weekend bagging around Rs63 crore nett. Pathaan made Rs27.50 crore nett on its second Sunday, which has seen it set a new record for a Bollywood film. Earlier, the film had surpassed the record of Aamir Khan’s Dangal [2016] which had made Rs374.53 crore nett.
Despite its controversies, mixed views, Pathaan has beaten all to become the most successful film in Hindi film industry.
Made at an estimated budget of Rs250 crore, Pathaan was released across 4500 screens in India. As we started with Brian Lara, well the West Indies legend also holds the record for the highest first class score of 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham in 1994. With Kartik Aaryan’s Shehzada [2023] being pushed to 17 February, Pathaan looks on course to score a 500 at the desi box office.
