The debate about nepotism in Bollywood and how star kids get their first break easily started a few years back and it remains a prominent subject. Zoya Akhtar, as we all know, is the daughter of the legendary screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar. In a recent interview, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap shared that despite Zoya being from a film family, she had to struggle a lot to make her directorial debut Luck By Chance in 2009.

While talking to The Lallantop, Anurag said, “She has struggled a lot. Farhan is her younger brother, Zoya started working before him. But she had to wait 8-10 years to get her first film made. Farhan had made three films by then, but Zoya had to scout for actors for her first film.”
In the same interview, Anurag revealed that Zoya had initially cast Saif Ali Khan for Luck By Chance but he walked out of the film. “She has earned her place. She hasn’t got anything in gift.”
Anurag also said that at that time, there was a prejudice towards female filmmakers. “Which was broken by Farah Khan and Zoya. The tragedy with Zoya was that if an actor walked out of her film, she used to get to know about that through newspapers. In today’s times, she wouldn’t have had to struggle that much. But she has herself earned her place,” he said.
