Anurag Kashyap has spoken about how problematic last few years had been for him. This period also saw the shutting down of the production house Phantom Studios, in which he was one of the partners. He also said that it was during this period that he directed a few films written by others because he didn’t want to repeat himself.
Anurag Kashyap on the challenging last few years, “Was bored of people expecting me to do another gangster movie”
Speaking with Variety, Kashyap said, “I’ve liked everything that I’ve done. For me personally, I will not do what I don’t want to do. But sometimes in between, after Psycho Raman (Raman Raghav 2.0) came a phase where this whole Phantom fiasco that happened, the lockdown that happened, there were a lot of things going on.”
During this phase, he did films like Manmarziyaan and Dobaaraa. He added that his latest film Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat was the only film that was conceptualized by him. Starring Alaya F and Karan Mehta, the film had released earlier this year.
“I worked a lot on other people’s scripts,” said the filmmaker. “I wrote a lot of other people’s scripts and only one that I wrote was Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat, which was an idea that originated out of nowhere and I wanted to explore that because I was bored of people always expecting me to go back and create another gangster movie. Unless you get something new and exciting that happens why would I do it?”
Kashyap’s upcoming film Kennedy also takes him back to his roots. With an unusual cast of Rahul Bhat and Sunny Leone, he has described the film as ‘a character-driven dark nightmare thriller about redemption.’ The movie is selected to premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
