The trailer of Pathaan was finally unveiled on Tuesday, January 10. And as expected, it broke the internet and this was expected as it is one of the most awaited films in Indian cinema. Interestingly, the prominent members of the South industry came out to support the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer as they tweeted the trailer link and good wishes. One such personality was superstar Thalapathy Vijay. A lot of heads turned when a tweet was made from his official account wherein he wished good luck to Shah Rukh and the team of Pathaan, along with the link of the Tamil trailer of the film. After all, scroll down on Vijay’s Twitter handle and you’d see that he has only posted links and assets of his own films. One can’t remember when was the last time or how many years back did he ever post or promote an outside film.
As Thalapathy Vijay makes a rare tweet to promote Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, trade experts and exhibitors discuss whether he should be a part of the YRF Spy Universe: “If you can manage to get Shah Rukh Khan and Vijay together in a film, imagine the kind of numbers it’ll do. You are looking at Rs. 100 crores on day 1”
We asked trade experts to comment on this interesting development. Trade analyst Atul Mohan said, “When Vijay’s fans would see that their favourite actor has tweeted about someone else’s film for the first time, imagine how they would go crazy about Pathaan. It’ll help boost the collections. And also it’ll benefit Jawan, as it also stars Shah Rukh and it’s directed by Atlee, with whom Vijay has a long association.”
Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, stated, “As far as the tweet goes, I think everyone from all fraternities is going all out and talking about it, and asking fans to watch the trailer of Pathaan. And there’s an obvious Atlee connection since Vijay has done films with the filmmaker and Atlee is now working with Shah Rukh.”
Pathaan, as we all know, is a part of the YRF (Yash Raj Films) spy universe. Apart from Pathaan, Tiger (Salman Khan) and War’s Kabir (Hrithik Roshan) are also a part of it. Looking at the way Thalapathy Vijay went out of his way to support Pathaan, we wonder how interesting it’ll be to see him join the spy universe. After all, we are living in an era wherein the North and South divide is blurring. Actors from both regions are working with each other or the filmmakers are releasing dubbed versions to ensure that their films reach out to the maximum number of people.
Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Bihar, seemed excited about this idea. He said, “I think it would be amazing. All top stars down South and all top stars in Bollywood should start working together as it’ll create such beautiful synergy. That is when the true pan-India explosions will start happening. If you can manage to get Shah Rukh Khan and Vijay together in a film, imagine the kind of numbers it’ll do. You are looking at Rs. 100 crores on day 1. This is what we should be aiming for. We have the potential. KGF – Chapter 2 (2022) did business of Rs. 1000 crores in India. The same goes for RRR (2022). You have to push the envelope.”
He added, “Not just Vijay. We need to get people like Jr NTR, Ajith, Yash etc. Imagine if Salman Khan and Yash collaborate on a film. If it’s a franchise, it’s even better. In my cinema, KGF – Chapter 2 was played at 6 am for the first time and the show was sold out. Agar Shah Rukh aur Vijay saath mein aa jaaye, mere theatre mein toh subah 4 baje se shows full hone lagenge. Hence, we need to go for ‘Marvelization’ of theatrical business.”
Atul Mohan remarked, “The lines are definitely blurring. Our Hindi films have never recorded extraordinary collections down South. Rarely some films have done well and that too only in cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin etc. If Vijay is cast in a spy universe film, then the collections will be huge as his fans are guaranteed to throng the cinemas in Tamil Nadu. Hypothetically speaking, even if 25,000 fans watch the film in theatres, the purpose is served.”
Girish Johar, in agreement, stated, “I think it’s a brilliant idea if Vijay can come and be a part of the spy universe. In fact, there are speculations that he might be doing a special appearance in Shah Rukh’s other film, Jawan. At the end of the day, we all want tremendous buzz and hype, positivity around a film and anything possible to get audiences in cinemas. And such a move will help achieve that since Vijay is a huge star. His recent film Varisu has opened to fantastic numbers down South. After the pandemic, everyone wants the industry to be back on top.”
Film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi differed slightly as he observed, “I don’t know how much it’ll help Vijay to be a part of the spy universe that’s in Hindi. But Vijay would make the franchise bigger in Tamil Nadu because, in that state, he’s one of the biggest stars ever. I also don’t know if Yash Raj Films is looking to linguistically diversify and expand the universe. Having said that, Vijay has got a universe of his own. He’s already a part of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe. He’s also doing some phenomenal films independently as well.”
Akshaye continued, “What I feel will add value and numbers to the business of Hindi films is one of the top Telugu stars coming in. Telugu films have done terrific business in Hindi. The Telugu stars draw a huge audience in the Hindi speaking belt as well. It’ll be interesting to see one of the Telugu superstars like Allu Arjun, Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Mahesh Babu etc. comes into one of the ‘verses’ in Hindi, be it YRF Spy Universe or Rohit Shetty Cop Universe. Tamil cinema is still isolated from a large section of the Hindi speaking audience. Telugu cinema is the bridge that connects the North from the South. A Telugu actor’s presence will add value to the business in Andhra Pradesh-Telangana and boost even the Hindi business.”
