The biggest cinematic event of world cinema, Avatar: The Way of Water, has taken a roaring start at the box office in India. According to early estimates, the James Cameron directorial is flirting with Rs. 40 crore opening at the box office in India. The trends throughout the day indicate an opening day in the range of Rs. 38.50 to 40.50 crores, and with this, the epic has emerged as the second-biggest Hollywood opener of all time in India.
The business of Avatar 2 is majorly driven by the South Indian markets, as Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka alone have raked in around Rs. 22 crores nett on the opening day. The North, East and West Indian markets put up good occupancy on the opening day with collections falling in the Rs. 17 crore range. The all-India opening is simply historic.
The business in the North will grow on Saturday and Sunday, and given the excellent word of mouth among the audience, the film might spring in a mega surprise by scoring a Monday bigger than Friday in Hindi speaking market. Avatar 2 has comfortably crossed the opening day number of films like Spiderman: No Way Home, Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, and Avengers: Infinity War, and is just behind Avengers: End Game, as far as the business of Hollywood films in India is concerned.
The opening weekend of Avatar will be at least Rs. 120 crores, and this can go much beyond this since the film has loads and loads of shows and the capacity to register big gains on Saturday & Sunday.
