Finally, there is a film which has emerged as at least a reasonable success at the box office. Ever since the release of Pathaan more than seven weeks back, there hasn’t been a single box office success. Hence, all eyes were on how would Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar turn out to be. The expectations from the Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor starrer were that Rs 150 crores mark would be comfortably crossed and after the release of the film, even I felt that the rom-com cum family drama by Luv Ranjan had a shot at the Rs 200 Crore Club.
Well, though that didn’t quite turn out to be the case, the collections have still been decent enough to allow the film to enter the Rs 100 Crore Club. This happened on the second Saturday when Rs 5.25 crores* more came in, which pushed the overall total to Rs 101.44 crores*. Yes, it has taken more than the expected time to reach here since ideally the century should have been scored in the first week itself, and in this case we also had a nine-day extended week with the partial holiday of Holi to begin with as well. Still, at least a century has been scored and that’s good.
For both Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, this is their sixth century. While Ranbir has gone past the Rs 100 crores mark before with Sanju, Brahmastra, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Barfi, Shraddha Kapoor has done that with Chhichhore, Saaho, Stree, ABCD – Any Body Can Dance and Ek Villain. Pre-pandemic, the film would have easily got into Rs 150-175 crores range but then these are different times and in context of that the fact that Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar has at least sailed through is good enough.
*Estimates. Final numbers awaited
