Creator David Weil uses a non-linear form of storytelling in Citadel which keeps you hooked. There is enough for everyone. What works for the show is that amid this chaotic mission in the foreground, the characters and their backstory are not sidelined. The character arc of the agents forms a very important role in storytelling. Citadel doesn’t stretch or bore you out with its length. It is fast-paced and entertaining, which really makes for one of the good binge-watch recommendations in recent times.

As action-packed and filled with blood and gore it may be, Citadel does not come without its fair share of flaws. Playing with memories being one of the most bizarre aspects of it. Overall, the show has opened on quite a kick-ass note and we can’t wait to see what else Nadia and Mason have to offer in the coming episodes.

For all the limitless resources that went into producing it, Citadel feels disappointingly boxed-in, mainly because the Russos, in their post-Marvel years, have begun to confuse narrative scale with ambitious storytelling. They aren’t the same thing. A simple conversation between two people could be ambitious if the filmmakers play around with form and structure, and when they don’t, even a globe-trotting thriller set in an interconnected universe of pretty people could end up being Citadel.

Its plot isn’t Citadel’s biggest strength. Most often than not, you know what is going to happen next. Predictability is a bane for a show which is billed as a spy thriller and that’s exactly why Citadel suffers. There may be many twists and turns in the narrative but they don’t push you towards the edge of your seat or make you sit up. What make up for the lack of a thrilling and nail-biting screenplay are the action sequences and the cinematography, which is exceptional. The frenetic camera movement to continuous shifts between blurred and in-focus shots render a chic polish to the series

Citadel is made for a Pan World audience and the makers go the extra mile to make it that much more stylish and relatable for a global audience, with a story that will have you hooked and performances that are enchanting. Citadel should definitely be on your weekend watch list.

The best part about this show, which has some amazing action, and brilliant cinematography, is that it doesn’t assume that the audience can understand the backstory by looking at the present. The first two episodes screened for the critics hint at a lot. An abruptly broken love story, some incomplete jobs, and a very massive action sequences that we are prepping ourselves for. The only fear is that all these threads meet somewhere and don’t go unattended.

Though the first two episodes are predominantly character set-up, there’s a satisfying amount of action to keep the momentum going. Fans of the world-saving genre may notice 007, Mission Impossible, John Wick-brand of high-octane chases, grisly hand-to-hand combat involving confidential nuclear codes, two-faced diplomats, bounty hunter twins against incessant twists and turns at a globetrotting pace. Clichéd at it may be, Citadel’s fine assortment of cool, composed, cheeky actors lend it wholesome life.

By no means is Citadel a bad show. It is thoroughly enjoyable and at times, whistle-worthy as well. But there is no novelty, at least not in the first two episodes. The hope is that the narrative will recover and find its feet in the remainder of the season because there is so much promise here.
