Bigg Boss 16 saw the popularity Tina Datta reach to new heights as fans of the actress showcased their support for Tinzi during many occasions. Rising to fame with her role as Ichha in Uttaran which has now gone to acquire a cult status of sorts, Tina returned to fiction shows after four years, and yet again with a different avatar. This time the humble girl Ichha has transformed to a strong-headed, modern girl Surili in the show Hum Rahe Na Rahe Hum which will also explore her chemistry with Jay Bhanushali.
EXCLUSIVE: Bigg Boss 16 star Tina Datta opens up about playing a character who takes a stand for herself in Hum Rahe Na Rahe Hum
Tina Datta opened up about her character of a middle-class girl in Mumbai saying that Surili in reel-life is quite similar to Tina in real life. She told Bollywood Hungama, “It is very much like who Tina is in her real life. She is very modern girl who looks after herself, her aunt and the entire family which is me also in your life.” She went on to add that Surili is not one of the quintessential bahu (daughter-in-law) role that is being showcased on television. “She is a character which I can totally relate to because she is modern and not the typical saree-clad bahu jo kitchen mein reh kar khana bana rahi hai (who stands in the kitchen and cooks food for the family) and all of that. She is young, vibrant, independent girl who runs a café in Colaba. At the same time, it is a very challenging character who has got a couple of shades.”
Further, she opened up about how her middle-class image is quite different from the general picturization of Colaba, which is generally represented as one of the poshest localities in Mumbai. While the area is known for its richness, let us tell you that the location also has its own share of lower and upper-middle class people residing. Talking about breaking away from the general picturization of Colaba, Tina added, “I don’t think so that’s a fact. For example, Bandra too has a mix crowd of rich, and working-class family. It is the same for every location. Colaba too has offices and its fair share of working-class families. It is such a wrong perception. Colaba main bhi taxis chalte hai (Colaba also has taxis). Its not like everyone owns a BMW there.”
The actress also compared it to her character of Ichha from Uttaran, showcasing how the characters onscreen has evolved. “When I was portraying the character of Ichha in Uttaran, she was very docile. Woh Bholi thi, palat ke jawaab nahi deti thi, chup chap sab sun leti thi (she was naïve, she wouldn’t answer back and would listen to everything), and she would fight her battles in her own way. But Surili is very upfront and woh aaj ki ladki hai (she belongs to the current generation)
She recalled a scene where Surili’s bold nature comes to the forefront. Tina Datta continued, “Jaise humne ek scene kiya tha parking lot mein jahan ek drunk ladka uske saath batameezi karta hai (we recently did a scene in the parking lot where a drunk man misbehaves with her). But she was not scared or was like a fragile, docile girl ki Oh my god, mere saath kya ho gaya, izzat lutt gayi and all that. Woh usse palat ke jawab deti hai ya tappad maar deti. She would be like, ‘Aaj kal ki ladki hai, itni batameezi kaise kar rahe ho mere saath’ (what’s happening with me, what about my honor, etc. She would fight back, slap him and would question his audacity about misbehaving with her.) So of course, in that way, every character evolves over time over a period of time. So that’s, I really love this character Surili,” she concluded.
