EXCLUSIVE: Kunal Kemmu on Kanjoos Makhichoos: ‘I don’t think creative changes happen in a perfectly written script’

Since the actor is a writer and will also make his directorial debut as well soon, Kunal Kemmu was asked if he suggested any creative changes to Kanjoos Makhichoos though he on-boarded only as an actor. He said, “The fact that I am a writer-director doesn’t intrude anywhere with my responsibility of being an actor. I believe we wear different hats at different jobs. As an actor, my priority is discussing my character with my writers and directors and see how I can immerse myself into it and make it mine. What can I bring to it differently? I don’t think creative changes happen in a perfectly written script. All you need to do is make a little improvisation here and there, be it in certain dialogues or scenes which happens in every film. I don’t think me being a writer-director makes any difference in the process of acting.”

Kanjoos Makhichoos is the story of Jamnaprasad Pandey (Kunal Khemu) who is infamous in the entire town of Deoria, Uttar Pradesh as a miser. His parents, Gangaprasad Pandey (Piyush Mishra) and Saraswati Pandey (Alka Amin), wife Madhuri (Shweta Tripathi) and son Krish, are fed up with Jamna’s penny-pinching habits. Right from allocating one bucket per person for bathing to using one agarbatti throughout the month, Jamnaprasad never spares a single rupee unnecessarily. However, little does the family know that Jamna has been saving up to fulfill his father’s longstanding wish of going on a char-dhaam yatra.

Jamna’s happiness of having fulfilled his father’s wish is short lived because destiny plays tricks and due to heavy rains and flooding, the contact between the family breaks. The Government declares people missing for more than 25 days dead and releases a compensation of Rs. 7 lakhs for each missing person, making it 14 lakhs for Jamna’s both parents. However, by the time the money reaches Jamnaprasad, it is reduced to 10 Lakhs as government officers in the middle have generously shared 4 lakhs of the compensation money amongst themselves. Upset that he has been cheated like this, Jamna decides to fight back against an illicit system. But, will a powerless, generally undermined middle-class person win against a powerful, corrupt system?
