Kabir Khan is known as the director of successful films like New York, Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Over the last one year or so, he has also become known as someone who made 83. The cricket film, based on India’s 1983 World Cup victory, received immense praise. But unfortunately for Kabir and the team, it didn’t become successful at the box office.

EXCLUSIVE: Love I have got for 83 is 3 times of all my films put together, says Kabir Khan

Looking back, Kabir believes that the timing of the film worked against its favour. In an exclusive video chat with Bollywood Hungama, the filmmaker said, “Yes, our timing was very bad. We jumped into the second wave. Four days into our release, Delhi shut down and by the time the first week ended, nine states had shut down. You can’t fight that.”

Kabir also shared that he was depressed and sad for a month or two about the film not clicking at the ticket window. “It was really a work of passion that came together so beautifully,” he said. “The actors were brilliant. The technical department really did a fabulous job and the VFX. Nobody even realizes how much of the VFX (it had). People don’t realize that 83 has more than 3000 VFX shots. It’s what we call ‘invisible VFX.’”

But over a period of time, Kabir continued to receive love and appreciation from the film, especially after it was released on OTT. Explaining that, he added, “The kind of love I have got from this film is probably three times of any of my film or I would say all my films put together. And I have made films that have got a lot of love from the audience.”

During the course of the conversation, Kabir also agreed that 83 is his best film till date. “I don’t want to say it because it’s my film,” he said. “I now have a distance from that film. 83 is the best film I have made as a filmmaker; as far as the craft goes. I have not met anybody who has seen the film and not liked. Every other film I would look back and say, I should have done this or that or created or crafted this better. When I look back at 83, I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s just one of those films where everything came together exactly the way (I wanted). I own every second of it.”

83 starred Ranveer Singh in the role of the legendary former Indian team captain Kapil Dev.
