From Epik High, JAY B, THE BOYZ to STAYC, TRI.BE, PURPLE KISS – Here is a round-up of Korean music releases in February 2023

EPIK HIGH – STRAWBERRY

After releasing the stunning album Epik High is Here Part 2 last year, the veteran hip hop trio released an EP this year right around the anniversary of their previous release to remind everyone that they are still here and making music even. The EP sports the classic Epik High charm as they speak their hearts out in lyrics backed with funky hip hop beats and synths. The EP features collaborations with Jackson Wang and Hwasa of MAMAMOO.

STAYC – TEDDY BEAR

The bubbly girl group STAYC is back with another bubblegum track. Aptly titled Teddy Bear, the song speaks about taking a break and having some time for oneself. There is a mishmash of synths and bass woven throughout the track as the girls belt out lyrics with a smooth finesse.

TRI.BE – WE ARE YOUNG

If you are looking for a track is a ray of sunshine from the start to finish, then TRI.BE’s We Are Young is the one. This dance pop number speaks about the moment where one is young and can do anything their hearts desire. Mastered with synth and percussions throughout the track, We Are Young is a boost of energy.

JAYB (GOT7) – Whiskey

GOT7’s leader JAYB might be away on military enlistment at the moment, but he made sure to leave the fans with a parting gift. Aptly titled Seasonal Hiatus, JAYB’s three track mini-album is prepared in classic JAYB fashion. The songs have a laid back feel to them which is interspersed with the jazzy RnB beats. The track Whiskey is the type of song that you’d like to listen to when you unwind after a tiring day, perhaps with a glass of whiskey in hand.

BSS – FIGHTING

SEVENTEEN members Seungkwan, Hoshi and DK came together once again to deliver an uplifting and peppy mini-album Second Wind. The title track is called Fighting, a term used by the Koreans to mean “Rock it!” or “Hang in there!” The song reflects the term’s ideology as the trio belts out joyous tunes and dances funky moves. The recurring percussion in the chorus adds up to the enthusiasm exuded by BSS in the song.

PURPLE KISS – SWEET JUICE
If you’re looking for something sultry and evocative to listen to, then PURPLE KISS’s Sweet Juice is the track for you. The song employs rising orchestral music paired with a rhythmic tap-snap-clap beat akin to the cup song in Sweet Juice. PURPLE KISS truly exhibits a rich and harmonious charm with this latest comeback.
TNX – LOVE OR DIE

TNX’s latest musical offering Love or Die is a hardcore confession of love which hurts but they don’t mind the pain. The song features a hip hop base beat matched with a climatic rise to the chorus punctuated with electric guitar riffs as the members take turns singing. TNX’s confession of love leaves the listeners with an earworm of a chorus.

THE BOYZ – ROAR

It won’t be THE BOYZ comeback if it does not have a bold theme to it. With ROAR, the boys take it a notch higher as they sing about the temptation, doing the right thing and following their hearts unapologetically. The vocal harmonization backed with whistling in the chorus elevates the thematic feel in the song.

FIFTY FIFTY – CUPID

FIFTY FIFTY is one of the most promising girl groups of 2022. The rookie group made a comeback with the mellifluous track Cupid, which also marks the release of their first single album. Cupid features retro tunes and a vocal harmony that matches that rosy mood that the lyrics paint. The song would definitely match to a soundtrack of a romantic comedy for it carries with the charm of innocent love.

YESUNG – FLORAL SENSE (ft. WINTER of aespa)

SUPER JUNIOR’s YESUNG has been synonymous with soft ballads and RnB tracks for his solo comebacks and this one is no different. The singer incorporates ample floral visuals in his lyrics to express a love that blooms like a flower. Girl group aespa’s Winter matches the song’s mellow mood with her soft vocals. Floral Sense would make a great addition to a sundowner playlist for it sports the perfect percussion.

SPECIAL MENTION: SOULBYSEL VOL 04’s ‘Early’, AB6IX’s Park Woo Jin’s ‘Self Potrait’, Minhyun’s ‘Hidden Side’, BE’O’s ‘Akita’.
