Hugh Jackman is opening about the adverse impact his fan-favorite character Wolverine has had on his vocals. “I’ve done some damage to my voice as Wolverine. My falsetto is not as strong as it used to be and that I directly put down to some of the growling and yelling,” Jackman said on a BBC show, as shared by Entertainment Weekly. “My voice teacher in drama school would’ve been horrified by some of the things I did [as Wolverine].” Jackman has been a part of numerous plays and musicals in his early acting days.

Since then he went on to star in The Boy from Oz, Les Misérables, The Greatest Showman, and ended his Broadway run in The Music Man revival alongside Sutton Foster last month. “We learned a technique [in school] of how to shout and how to yell without ruining your voice. However, during Wolverine, I did some screaming and yelling and things that I think did damage to my voice,” he went on to explain.
“I work with a singing teacher and I try not to hurt myself. I put a lot of effort into both physical movement and my vocal preparation for every role.” Jackman first portrayed the mutant in 2000’s X-Men. Since then, he played the role in 10 films including the upcoming Deadpool threequel, starring opposite his longtime frenemy Ryan Reynolds.
The film marks Deadpool’s official entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Deadpool 3 is slated to debut in theaters on November 8, 2024.
