The backlash and threats Massey and even his infant faced over the propaganda film could have influenced his decision.

The nation woke up to the shocking news of actor Vikrant Massey taking an indefinite break from acting. Late last night, the 12th Fail (2023) actor stunned everyone with an emotional post on Instagram.

Massey thanked his fans for the love and support he had received over the years but then dropped a bombshell:

“As I move forward, I realise it’s time to recalibrate and go back home. As a husband, father, and son. And also, as an actor,” Massey wrote in his post.

He added, “So, come 2025, we will meet each other one last time—until time deems right.”

These words sent shockwaves across the industry, his fans, media, and social media. Many are now wondering what led Massey to take this decision. If it is purely due to personal reasons, it is understandable. However, there is speculation that the decision may have been driven by the backlash and threats Massey—and even his infant—faced over the propaganda film The Sabarmati Report (2024). Massey had disclosed these issues during media interactions leading up to the film’s release.

The Sabarmati Report (2024)

The Sabarmati Report is based on the arson that took place on the Sabarmati Express, which led to the 2002 Gujarat riots. The Ekta Kapoor-produced film was criticised for addressing the incendiary incident while ignoring the other barbaric crimes that occurred during the riots.

Many were surprised by Massey’s involvement in the film, as he was previously known for his left-liberal views. His decision to participate in what was deemed a Right Wing propaganda film suggested a possible ideological shift. Now that the film has come and gone, perhaps Massey has had time to introspect. However, if his family—even his infant—was threatened, their safety would understandably take precedence over everything else. These threats may well have influenced his decision.  Massey married fellow actor Sheetal Thakur in 2022, and the couple has a young child.

It is possible Massey took up The Sabarmati Report out of desperation, but the versatile actor has enjoyed the best phase of his career over the past 18 months. The success of 12th Fail (2023) boosted his standing in the industry. Earlier this year, Massey received praise for his chilling performance as a psychotic murderer in Sector 36, which was loosely based on the infamous Nithari killings. While playing such dark characters can be disturbing, they are unlikely to demotivate a committed actor from his craft.

Whatever the actual reasons, only Massey can fully explain his decision. Notably, while he mentioned that fans would see him one last time in 2025, he also added, “until time deems right.” By this measure, calling it a retirement may be premature. It is more apt to consider it an indefinite break. Fans will hope Massey takes a year or two off, replenishes himself, and hopefully makes a strong comeback.
