Manisha Koirala speaks on Baba’s box-office failure; says Rajinikanth starrer finished her career in south films : Bollywood News

Manisha Koirala is a name that needs no introduction in the Indian film industry. She is one of the most versatile actresses of her generation, who has worked with renowned South actors as well including superstar Rajinikanth. However, her career in the Tamil film industry was short-lived. Speaking on the same note recently, Manisha said that her career in the southern film industry ended after appearing in the 2002 Rajinikanth release Baba, which later turned out to be a cult classic.

It all happened during her interaction with the YouTube channel, O2 India. The veteran actress asserted, “Baba was probably my last big Tamil film. It flopped so badly in those days. It was such a huge disaster. A lot of expectations were on the film and when it flopped, I thought my career in south films was gone completely and it did in a way.” As she continued, Koirala mentioned that she had multiple projects in the South before appearing in Baba. However, following the film’s box office failure, she received fewer and fewer offers.

Manisha further added, “After Baba flopped, I stopped getting offers. Strangely, the film turned out to be a hit when it was re-released which is unheard of. Rajini sir can never give a flop. He is such a kind man to work with.”

It is worth mentioning here that last year, on the occasion of Rajinikanth’s birthday, Baba was re-released and reportedly performed well at the box office. Although the film had initially failed to make a mark, it was an important project for Rajinikanth, who not only played the lead but also produced the film and wrote its story and screenplay. The movie’s storyline revolves around an atheist young man who discovers that he is the reincarnation of a Himalayan saint. Despite the initial disappointment, Rajinikanth is said to hold the film in high regard.
