Ashima Chibber, who has previously directed ‘Mere Dad Ki Maruti’ helms Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway. She skims through some valid arguments on patriarchy, domestic violence being normalised in most Indian families and what constitutes a ‘good mother’. She doesn’t whitewash her flawed lead character either, but we wish she had dug deeper. The intent is visible, but execution barely scratches the surface.

A film that has its heart in the right place – or so it appears at first flush – should inarguably be worthy of generous applause. Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway, directed by Ashima Chibber, isn’t. Almost everything else in the overwrought and exhausting film, including the central performance by Rani Mukerji, is all haywire.

Director Ashima Chibber has encapsulated this journey with a maternal approach. The film closely shows not only Debika’s fight against the Norwegian authority, but also her fight against her in-laws to get her children back. This is a story of an ordinary, simple woman who has always been obedient to not only her parents, but also to her husband. She is a kind of woman who didn’t have much say in the family when it came to decision making, but her fight to get her children back was truly extraordinary. It is only her love for children that helped her gather the strength to fight against all odds to get them back.

Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway is a story that needed to be told to remind us about the power of a strong-willed mother. But it should have been told differently without giving in to the tropes of commercial cinema.

Ashima Chibber, who has also written the story, handles the sensitive issue with care. However, by the end, the film feels a bit stretched. The courtroom drama in the end infuses some life into the film. The music is one of the best things about it, and do not miss Rani Mukerji’s song as the credits roll. Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway is not a light watch, but something that is compelling and emotional.

Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway’s overwrought proceedings take a breather in Jim Sarbh’s composed lawyer. His fine thoughts on adoption to an equally level-headed Balaji Gauri at the fag end is the only sobering, sensible thing uttered in this cacophonous ode to motherhood.
