This is going to be one extended weekend of huge records, and how. More than a decade after the release of Ghajini when it kept the record keepers busy by turning out to be the first film ever to enter the Rs. 100 Crore Club, Pathaan is generating a lot of heat at the box office. Records are being shattered left, right and center, and what’s happening is something unbelievable, something unprecedented. Shah Rukh Khan has reclaimed his throne of being King Khan and that’s reflected in the manner so many new records have been created even on a non-holiday.
The film has taken an astonishing start of Rs. 57 crores (Hindi Rs. 55 cr + Tamil & Telugu Rs. 2 cr) and what makes it special is that it’s a huge Rs. 20 crores ahead of the last non-holiday all-time opener, Brahmastra. The Ranbir Kapoor starrer created history when it opened at Rs. 37 crores last year and now Pathaan has come and made it look like a regular release. The Shah Rukh Khan starrer has yet again shown how an event film ought to be, and celebrations are being heard from a distance. The film has become a festival in itself and that too when the real weekend is yet to begin.
Released across 5500 screens in the domestic market and 2500 screens overseas by Yash Raj Films, the Sidharth Anand-directed spy action thriller has gone past its own War which had collected Rs. 53.35 crores (including Rs. 1.75 crores from south versions) and on Gandhi Jayanti holiday. Republic Day holiday is today and given the kind of appreciation that the biggie with Deepika Padukone and John Abraham is earning already, it’s a given that the Rs. 60 crores mark would be crossed rather comfortably, which would be the first of course. What has to be seen is whether Rs. 65 crores mark is eventually touched today.
