Consequently, matters turn hotter for the absconders but Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba is, in the ultimate analysis, more cat-and-mouse than cobras and crocodiles. Indications in the film’s final moments in a north Indian hill town are clear enough – the story is far from over. But are we ready for more? Yes, if Taapsee Pannu keeps propelling this female-led genre exercise with the same gusto.

All in all, ‘Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba’ is a good watch, if you do not constantly engage in comparing it to ‘Haseen Dillruba’ (something that I, sadly, couldn’t refrain from). Hopefully, if part 3 is being developed, we will hope that Dhillon brings out an edgier version without compromising on the nuances.

The film’s downfall lies in its story. In the first half, Kanika and Jayprad provide enough intrigue to engage viewers. The world-building, moments of comedic relief, and the background score by Sachet-Parampara enhance the narrative, as does Vishal Sinha’s cinematography. However, the second half of the film loses momentum and becomes increasingly predictable. While predictability isn’t inherently negative, it undermines the film’s potential here. The latter half fails to uphold the coherence established earlier, making the story seem too convenient and losing focus of the characters’ arcs.

There were some nice touches early in the film as we get reacquainted with Rani and Rishu. The recap of Hasseen Dillruba is edited to the Kishore Kumar duet Ek Hasina Thi. The second half of Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba is more a crime procedural as Montu figures out how to nail the couple. At one point he comments, “Khichdi toh paki thi,” and that sums up much of the sequel.
