Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington to star in August Wilson’s Netflix film adaptation of The Piano Lesson

Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington are on board to star in August Wilson’s Netflix film adaptation of The Piano Lesson. Malcolm Washington, Denzel Washington’s son, is attached to direct the film adaptation based on a screenplay he penned with Virgil Williams.

According to Variety, set in 1936 Pittsburgh during the aftermath of the Great Depression, The Piano Lesson follows the lives of the Charles family, a household led by Doaker Charles (Jackson), and an heirloom, the family piano, which is decorated with designs carved by an enslaved ancestor. Washington plays Boy Willie, Doaker’s nephew, a role Jackson originated in the 1987 production.

Announced back in 2021, the film adaptation will also star Ray Fisher, Danielle Deadwyler, Michael Potts and Corey Hawkins. Netflix’s The Piano Lesson is being produced by Denzel and Todd Black with Constanza Romero, Jennifer Roth and Katia Washington attached as executive producers.

As per the report, The Piano Lesson is part of Wilson’s 10-title American Century Cycle, that includes “Fences” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” both of which were adapted for the screen by Denzel and Black. Jackson and Washington come to The Piano Lesson film as they wrapped up a Broadway revival of the play consisting of 27 previews and 124 regular performances.
