Akshay Kumar’s performance added depth to the character of Vir Jagannath Mhatre, a simple guy from an interior village of Maharashtra. From the makers of Airlift, Baby, OMG 2, Toilet, and Jai Bhim, Sarfira is an incredible story set in the world of startups and aviation. The film is all set to inspire the common man to dream big and to chase their dreams even if the world calls you crazy.

Sarfira is a rather beautiful coming together of two schools of cinema – one that makes you whistle and clap and still silently appreciate its nuanced storytelling. It’s tear-jerking, inspiring, gratifying, wholesome and so much more. And it will most definitely help if you don’t let the extraordinary Soorarai Pottru colour your opinions.

At 155 minutes, Sarfira is a tad stretched and long, especially in the second half when the story has already taken off, but takes forever to land. A crisper narrative and some clever cuts at the editing table would have helped. The songs seemed a bit too unnecessary and could have easily been avoided to keep the story more focused and compact. Despite these lows, Sarfira soars high and keeps you invested in the story, and at the end, you are left smiling and feeling proud of Vir’s achievements.

Akshay’s portrayal of Vir Mhatre shows strife and struggle that often makes for engaging cinema. Despite his superstar status, he becomes the common man and shines in several scenes that allow him to emote and perform. Radhika Madan is absolutely brilliant in a performance that makes you wonder why filmmakers aren’t giving her such diverse roles.

Inspirational stories have the power to lift people, and Akshay Kumar’s Sarfira is one such tale that deserves attention. It follows the life of Vir Mhatre (an ex-Air Force officer and the founder of Deccan Airlines, played by Akshay Kumar), a man from a Maharashtra village with an ambition to launch a low-cost airline for people who can’t afford to travel by plane.

Akshay Kumar stars in creaky melodrama that’ll remind you of a 60s weepie. The film is only interested in fronting its hero. Akshay Kumar, who is in practically every frame of the film, isn’t actively terrible, but he doesn’t do anything here that he hasn’t done before.
