In 1968, when Sonia Gandhi came to India for the first time, she was staying with the Bachchan family. Superstar, Amitabh Bachchan’s mother, Teji Bachchan was the best friend of Indira Gandhi. So, she had taken good care of Sonia during her stay. In fact, she even taught her about Indian culture and ethics. When Sonia Gandhi married Rajeev Gandhi on February 25, 1968, her family stayed at the Bachchan’s home in Delhi.

The bride Sonia Gandhi’s saree was hand-spun by grandfather-in-law, Jawaharlal Nehru
Sonia Gandhi and Rajeev Gandhi tied the knot according to Hindu customs. While their wedding was a simple affair, the bride, Sonia looked glistening in a pale pink saree. However, the saree is super special for the Gandhis as it was hand-woven by Sonia Gandhi’s mother-in-law, Indira Gandhi’s father, Jawaharlal Nehru.
It was reported that during one of Jawaharlal Nehru’s terms in a British jail, he had hand spun the cotton saree from cloth for his daughter’s wedding. After which, Indira Gandhi presented the same saree to her bahu, Sonia.
Sonia Gandhi and Rajeev Gandhi embraced parenthood with the arrival of their son, Rahul Gandhi on June 19, 1970. Later, their family was complete with the birth of their daughter, Priyanka Gandhi on January 12, 1972.
