The plot only provides glimpses of Akbar’s reign, but goes off on different tangents, far away from history. This Web series is more about wine, opium, sex, more sex, gay love and incest. Yes, you read that right: Incest. The makers of Taj: Divided By Blood are perhaps sure that no one will raise a shindig for showing the Mughals indulging in incest, not in Amrit Kaal India. Naseeruddin Shah, who plays Akbar, looks thoroughly disinterested as if he is only playing the part for a hefty fee.

‘Taj: Divided by Blood’ is relentless in its ability to provide thrill and entertainment in the form of an engaging screenplay (Christopher Butera). Most of its elements align well to make it a riveting tale of love, lust and power-hungry royals, who once ruled the country, as if they were invincible. We’re already looking forward to the next season.

Let’s just say if Padmaavat and Samrat Prithviraj had a baby, it would be Taj- Divided By Blood. It aims for sweep and swagger, but is seldom marred by its shortcomings.

Without going into the historical accuracies or inaccuracies – for there are many – Taj Divided By Blood fails to hook. We adore the long shots of the beautiful Fatehpur Sikri sets and Akbar’s bejewelled Peacock Throne, but little else manages to leave a mark. That’s saying a lot about a historical drama that ended on a cliffhanger, and the promise of a Season 2. Maybe watch Gulmohar instead this weekend.

Unfortunately, the drama doesn’t last too long and you get distracted by the long pauses and heavy monologues. The makers seem to have invested more in the paraphernalia than the actual dynamics between the characters. For example, the Salim – Anarkali (Aditi Rao Hydari) romance held scope for a better treatment. It just felt like an offside storyline happened for the sake of clickbait.
