Sooraj Barjatya recently charmed audiences with the touching adventure drama, Uunchai (2022), starring Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Parineeti Chopra, Danny Denzongpa, Neena Gupta and Sarika. The film got viewers excited not just due to its star cast and plot but because it was directed by the blockbuster director. Sooraj Barjatya has made a permanent place in the hearts of moviegoers and his mere mention on the poster can attract viewers in hordes. And this kind of craze began with the super-duper success of Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994). It did a business of Rs. 72.47 crores at a time when even crossing the Rs. 10 crore mark was a feat. It was for this reason that there was a lot of curiosity for Sooraj’s next film, Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999). Even before the film was made, the media had begun speculating about its possible star cast.

According to Komal Nahta’s Film Information Magazine’s December 6, 1997 issue, rumours had spread in the trade circles that Sooraj Barjatya was keen to sign Suniel Shetty for Hum Saath Saath Hain. The rumours began after Sooraj went to went his film Bhai (1997) in cinemas with his producer-father, Rajkumar Barjatya.
It was then learnt that the father-son duo did indeed go to see Bhai but not with the intention of signing Suniel Shetty. Rather, they wanted to see the performances of the heroines of Bhai, Sonali Bendre and Pooja Batra.
Ultimately, it was Sonali Bendre who bagged the plum part in Hum Saath Saath Hain. She played the role of Preeti, the shy and demure love interest of Prem, played by Salman Khan. Their romantic track was found cute by most moviegoers and is memorable even today.
As per a report in the December 13, 1997 issue of Film Information, this was also a time when a section of media was able to correctly guess even before the official announcement that Salman Khan, Mohnish Bahl and Saif Ali Khan have bagged the roles of the three male leads.
