Vidya spoke on how she used to hide herself from shutterbugs earlier so that she does not get papped without makeup. She told journalist Faye D’souza, “Initially we were all very conscious, thinking about what to wear. I don’t wear makeup when I am not shooting or have events to attend. So initially it did bother me. I would literally pray that the photographers are not there. I would duck into my car so that they don’t spot me. I was quite a fugitive but then I was like this is who I am. I think it also comes with age and experience, and acceptance.. the realisation.. like whatever. Take it or leave it.”

Talking about pay disparity and shift of cinema, Vidya added, “Also, I really feel that we have to look at it in a larger context. The business of cinema.. it’s the men who have brought people to the theatres. However, with the success of more women-led films, we will make more money. Because, if you look at the ratio, it’s the same, however, the budget of women-led films is much smaller.”

When questioned about her dream role, Vidya Balan responded that she would like to portray Charlie Chaplin. She said, “I am dying to do that. I don’t know… may be a street artist who plays Chaplin. Someone needs to write. Also, I have always wanted to play MS Subbulakshmi. But I don’t think it will happen. We were supposed to make it with Rajeev Menon directing it but there’s some legalities now. It will thus be a long-cherished dream.”

On the professional front, Vidya has carved a niche for herself in women-centric films and achieved success. Some of these movies include, The Dirty PictureKahaaniTumhari SuluShakuntala DeviSherni, etc. She was last seen as a TV journalist in the Amazon Prime Video film Jalsa, featuring alongside Shefali Shah, Rohini Hattangadi, Manav Kaul and others. She will now be seen in Neeyat and another untitled movie directed by Shirsha Guha Thakurta.
