While we love a good action film when it’s awesome like Pathaan, there are too many of them out there today. For many of us romcom watchers, it seems Bollywood has little to offer. So, we thought of some romantic comedy film ideas we’d love to see the Hindi film industry create, so that we can see some awesome new onscreen pairs together and get our romance fix with a nice love story sans any maar-dhaad. Here they are.

Romantic comedy films Bollywood should try making
1. SRK and Shefali Shah’s single-parent romcom
The plot:
Shefali Shah is a recently divorced single mother whose child fights with another kid in school. She’s called into the principal’s office where she meets the other kid’s father, a widower, played by Shah Rukh Khan. Instead of a hostile altercation, he resolves the quarrel amicably, and the two organise playdates to make their squabbling kids bond. Somehow in all this, the two start spending more time together, be it in PTA meetings or while supervising each other’s kids. So, their empathy for each other turns into love. But could a potential interruption by Shefali’s ex, played by Saif Ali Khan, ruin their romance? Someone, preferably Gauri Shinde, has to make the movie so we can watch it and find out!
2. John Abraham and Anushka Sharma’s ‘opposites attract’ romance
The plot:
John plays a straight-laced IT guy who loves to paint but was pushed towards a “sensible” career by his parents. After engineering college, his life was all work and no play and he turned into the stereotypical shy geek with a 9 to 5 job and very few friends. That is, till his new neighbour moves in. Played by Anushka Sharma, she’s an artist who is living the dream he’s always had. A free-spirited soul with a huge social circle of quirky friends, she doesn’t live according to other people. But the twist is, after they start falling in love, she decides to move out. She doesn’t stick around to become the manic pixie dream girl who is just a tool to help him discover his true calling. What will become of these two? Will they ever meet again? Petition for Homi Adajania to make this movie so we can find out!
3. Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s office-based romantic comedy
The plot:
A potential film idea that could well be a Korean drama, this movie would begin with Kareena in a Ki & Kastyle avatar. She’s really committed to her work and doesn’t mess around when it comes to her career. One day she walks into her office, though, and sees the most shocking sight: her ex-boyfriend from college, played by Hrithik, is standing right there years after they lost touch because he moved abroad for his MBA.
He’s assigned to work on the same project as her, and she learns the bosses are going to decide who gets promoted based on their performance this time. As expected, they are frosty with each other initially and it only gets more awkward when they have to compete, especially now when they find their feelings for each other returning! Will either of them back down for the other? Dear Lord, please let Ayan Mukerji direct this film so we can find out!
4. Neena Gupta and Tabu’s love story of new beginnings
The plot:
We’ve seen the Grace & Frankie-style female friendship wherein two single women leave long-term marriages behind and kindle a friendship with each other. But, we’ll raise you one better. How about Neena Gupta and Tabu in a LGBTQIA+ romcom about two women in their 50s and 60s who left their unhappy marriages and then met each other, going on to finally fall in love? If this film is made, no one would be able to portray this story with more tenderness yet lighthearted comic timing than icons like Neena and Tabu. Can someone like Zoya Akhtar make it happen?
5. Abhay Deol and Alia Bhatt’s Imtiaz Ali-style travel romance
The plot:
This movie begins with Alia’s character quitting her job to pursue her dreams of becoming a travel photographer. She books her tickets to tour South East Asia to take photographs, and on the plane meets a fellow traveller, played by Abhay. A backpacker with a thirst for adventure and distaste for boredom, his charm instantly draws her in. They proceed to travel around together, when she finds out why he left everything behind to just travel. Will their dream of being together forever last, or is there a heartbreaking secret he’s not telling her? Imtiaz Ali needs to make the movie with these brilliant actors so we can find out.
6. Vicky Kaushal and Imran Khan’s soulful romance
The plot:
Bollywood has a serious, alarming dearth of LGBTQIA+ romances, and it needs to be remedied. Who better to do that than romcom king Imran Khan? We’re picturing a movie in which Imran plays a shy introvert who is too overwhelmed by social anxiety to ever make a move. But then, he meets Vicky’s character, a sweet and warm guy who is kind, honest, and open to love despite a heartbreaking past full of trauma. He falls hopelessly in love. Will Vicky’s character be the one who helps Imran see the good in the world and help him open up? This movie needs to be made, preferably by Shakun Batra, for the sake of our souls.
7. Siddhant Chaturvedi and Nora Fatehi’s film industry romcom
The plot:
Picture this: Nora plays a choreographer who has to coach a new entrant to the film industry, the son of a famous actor, played by Siddhant. He doesn’t show up for classes, doesn’t learn the moves, and seems really entitled. Meanwhile, this is Nora’s character’s big break, and if she pulls this off, it could mean more assignments to help pay her rent. Will she be able to get him to take this seriously? As the two spend more time together during rehearsals and learn more about each other’s stories, romance brews and something clicks. Will this story have a happy ending? We need to know, and for that, the movie needs to be made by Farah Khan!
8. Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan’s riches-to-rags romcom
The plot:
In this Schitt’s Creek-esque scenario, Preity would be a rich heiress with a huge fortune, and Saif, their family’s lawyer. One day, however, Preity finds out that her younger brother, played by Varun Dhawan, has swindled her out of her share of their trust fund and now, she has no money, no home, and no fancy clothes.
After being a quiet support system for her through the years, Saif’s character comes to her aid, promising to help get her money back. With him, she learns how to live like a layperson, the value of saving money, and just how privileged she was. Does she fall for him during all this and does it move her to see how much he has done for her? Will she go back to being entitled once her money is back and forget all about him? Karan Johar should make this movie with this hit pairing so we can find out!
