Zeenat Aman shares a Derek Walcott poem on the occasion of International Women’s Day, “This is a poignant reminder to love and accept myself”
On Wednesday, Zeenat took to Instagram and shared a Derek Walcott poem in her own voice. Sharing the post, she wrote, “A friend sent me this powerful poem by Derek Walcott one morning. It moved me, and I just had to share it with you. So yesterday I popped into @zanuski’s music studio and asked him to hit record.”
She added, “To me this is a poignant reminder to love and accept myself with the same tenderness that I do others. It is a poem for everyone, but it feels symbolic to be uploading it on International Women’s Day. If you do not know a woman who gives of herself freely, sometimes to her own neglect, then it’s likely that you are that woman.”
She also shared the poem in text. She wrote, “So, if this poem resonates with you and makes you think about someone specific, send it to them. I hope you enjoy my recitation, but if not, here’s the poem for you to read:
Love After Love
By Derek Walcott
The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.”
Soon after she shared the picture, industry friends and fans expressed themselves in the comments section. Reacting to the post a fan wrote, “Thank you for sharing this on Women’s Day! It’s especially important for young girls and for us women to love ourselves first, be comfortable with our image. A poem that brings home this story is wonderful and you have rendered it so well Zeenatji! Thank you again!” another user commented, “So appreciate how you are using your voice to heal us all here. Would be lovely if you make a YouTube channel where you read to us.”
A comment read, “Zeenat, where were you all this while? Somehow, discovering the real you hasn’t surprised me. I always imagined you to be like so. Thank you for your shares, especially this one,” “This is beautiful. I sat down in the local mall and heard and then read this post, it touched my heart, I became quite emotional, as Women we tend to put all ahead of ourselves, this really reminds us to not be a stranger in our own lives, to turn up in our own life story just as much as we turn up for our loved ones. Thank you Zeenat ji for sharing this, especially in your own voice and the picture is lovely. You already are the Queen of Hearts & Cinema but You are the Queen of the insta too. Happy Womens Day. Stay Blessed,” read another comment.
