Released in 1995, the Bollywood film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, which featured Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, turned out to be a trendsetter. In fact, the film is still running in Maratha Mandir. While in the past few years, Bollywood has delivered a bunch of remakes and is still working on a few. Speaking of making DDLJ’s remake, leading lady Kajol has clearly stated that it’s a complete no-no.
Kajol speaks on Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge remake; says the audience will “always be disappointed”
It all happened during her conversation with News18. Explaining her take, the actress said, “My personal opinion is that I don’t think that films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge should be remade. I feel the same for K3G (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham; 2001). I feel that magic can only be created once. If you recreate it, it just fizzles out and it won’t have the same feel.”
While adding that comparisons with the original film of 1995 would be inevitable and leave the audience disappointed, she asserted, “You’ll always be disappointed regardless of how well it is portrayed and done. Magic has a feel to it. Films give you that feel. You feel something when you watch them for the first time and nothing replicates that feeling.”
Besides her, the maker of the film, Aditya Chopra, and lead actor Shah Rukh Khan had also spoken about it in The Romantics, a docu-series released on Netflix. SRK recalled, “When we talked, we only talked about action films…that there will be blood coming out and fighting and everything. And they (Aditya Chopra and his then assistant, Karan Johar) narrated this really sweet, namby-pamby film to me, about this guy who doesn’t even run away with the girl!”
Not only this, but the series also revealed that Aditya had given advice to Shah Rukh when the latter was sceptical to say yes to DDLJ after the narration. “I would just advise you that don’t shut your doors on ever doing a love story because in this country a superstar will only be that person who will be every mother’s son, every sister’s brother, every college girl’s fantasy,” said Aditya Chopra to Shah Rukh.
