Warner Bros. recently released Shazam! Fury Of The Gods. Zachary Levi returns in the lead role along with the new formidable foes Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu. The sequel continues the story of a teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word “SHAZAM!,” is transformed into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam. While there was anticipation for the movie, in the US itself, the movie opened to $30 million at the box office. The underwhelming performance has been acknowledged by Levi himself.
Zachary Levi says families aren’t aware of Shazam! Fury Of The Gods after sequel bombs at box office: “The biggest issue we’re having is marketing”
Zachary Levi didn’t blame filmmaker Zack Snyder directly for the failure of Shazam sequel. However, he did acknowledge that after Warner Bros. shake-up, ousting of Synder and James Gunn & Peter Safran becoming the in-charge of DC Universe, fans wanted this particular sequel to fain. On Twitter, a user wrote, “There is no denying that at the moment there are many Snyder fans who are happy for the failure of your film and many of them wish that everything that is to come fails just for not continuing with the films of their director.”
“This is also true,” Levi responded. “Sad, but true. How much that actually affects the box office is anyone’s guess. But I think the biggest issue we’re having is marketing. This is a perfect family movie, and yet a lot of families aren’t aware of that. Which is just a shame.”
“I wasn’t expecting a repeat of the first movie critically, but I was still a little surprised because I think it’s a good film,” said director David F. Sandberg wrote in his own Twitter thread. “Oh well. As I’ve been saying for a while now I’m very eager to go back to horror (as well as trying some new things). After six years of Shazam, I’m definitely done with superheroes for now.”
“Just to be clear, I don’t regret even for a second making the Shazam movies,” Sandberg continued. “I’ve learned so much and gotten to work with some truly amazing people. Will forever be grateful that I got to direct two of these! They’ve been very challenging but valuable experiences. One thing I’ve really been looking forward to is disconnecting from the superhero discourse online. A lot of that stresses me out so much and it will be nice not having to think about that anymore.”
Rachel Zegler, who stars as Anne, also took to Twitter to the response from critics and the audience. “Hey, our film is actually really good!” Zegler wrote. “But mostly I just absolutely loved making it and the people I met whilst doing so. Go see it! Give it a chance. We have an 85% audience score for a reason.”
Zegler further wrote, “Some people out there [are] just being… senselessly mean. And it’s unnecessary. And I know, I know, ‘If you can’t handle the heat…’ and all that nonsense, and you’re right. But our film is actually very good. It’s just cool to hate on fun nowadays. That’s okay. We’re good.”
The film stars returning cast members Zachary Levi as Shazam; Asher Angel as Billy Batson; Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman; Adam Brody as Super Hero Freddy; Ross Butler as Super Hero Eugene; Meagan Good as Super Hero Darla; D.J. Cotrona as Super Hero Pedro; Grace Caroline Currey as Mary Bromfield / Super Hero Mary; Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley; Ian Chen as Eugene Choi; Jovan Armand as Pedro Pena; Marta Milans as Rosa Vasquez; Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez; with Djimon Hounsou as Wizard.
Joining the cast are Rachel Zegler with Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren. The film is directed by David F. Sandberg and produced by Peter Safran. It is written by Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan, based on characters from DC; Shazam! was created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck. The film was released in India on March 17.
